Pest Control

Bugs Begone provides safe, effective and affordable pest control treatment for carpenter ants in your home, cottage or work.

Did you know? Carpenter ants are sometimes confused with termites, but it is easy to tell the difference between them. The termite has straight antennae and a thick waist, and the carpenter ant has a very narrow waist and ‘elbowed’ (bent) antennae. Termites are found only in certain areas in Canada.*

Carpenter ants are found throughout Ontario and are common pests in homes and cottages.

The most common carpenter ants are shiny black in colour and one-half inch or more in length and shiny black. Other kinds of carpenter ants can be as small as a one-quarter inch and are reddish brown or two-toned.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood but they do chew it in order to construct nests in hollow trees, stumps, logs, posts and man-made wood structures. Wood is removed as sawdust (known as frass) and is pushed out of the nest. The frass may include other debris such as dead ants, parts of insects and other food.

Treatment of carpenter ants
Ant pest control

Carpenter ants found indoors during spring or summer could be invaders wandering in from outdoors or they may be foragers from a nest in the wall or ceiling. While there is no easy way to determine the source, it is important to do a thorough inspection.

It is very important to locate the nest as a direct application is the most effective way to treat it. Locating the source of carpenter ants can be very difficult as they are nocturnal for much of the year. The presence of sawdust is an important clue in locating ant nests as is hearing crunching/scratching sounds in the wood. Hiring the right team for ant pest control is an important first step in solving the infestation!

Carpenter ant pest control

Carpenter ant control is a job for a pest management professional.

The most effective treatment occurs when a nest is located and treated directly. When this isn’t possible a general treatment of the interior and exterior with appropriate products will work as well. This involves applying product to cracks, crevices, baseboards and various void areas.
